Cleaning solar panels: how to?

Cleaning solar panels is an important topic and understanding when and how to clean them is essential. Here's the formulation again:

Cleaning solar panels: how to?

Cleaning solar panels is a sensitive issue and if not done properly, they can cause damage. In this article, we have put together a list of when and how to clean solar panels.

When should solar panels be cleaned?

In general, solar PV systems do not require regular cleaning, as the rain cleans them on its own, and even in periods of no rain they do not get dirty enough to be worth cleaning.

A major study at the University of San Diego tested the efficiency of solar panels during 145 rain-free days. The results showed that even without rain, there was only a loss of efficiency of 7.4%, a relatively small cost increase for an average residential system. The situation is even better in Hungary, where there are no long periods without rain.

Efficiency losses can be noticeable in larger industrial systems, especially during long periods without rain. In such cases, it may be worth considering regular solar panel cleaning services or the purchase of appropriate cleaning equipment.

For residential solar PV systems, cleaning is generally not necessary, as the cost of cleaning can exceed the production loss. However, there are exceptions.

Stubborn dirt, accumulated leaves or large amounts of dirt can cause inefficiency in the long term. In such cases, you may want to consider cleaning your solar panels, but it is always worth checking first to make sure that it is really necessary.

How NOT to clean solar PV systems?

It is important to understand that poor cleaning methods can damage solar panels. Here are some things to avoid:

  1. Do not clean during the day when solar panels are heating up, as pouring cold or room temperature water on them can cause cracks.
  2. Do not use a pressure washer or steam cleaner as these can damage the surface of the solar panels.
  3. Avoid caustic cleaning products as they can cause malfunctions or electric shock.
  4. Do not attempt to dry clean, as dry cleaning can cause scratches that can lead to a loss of efficiency.
  5. Do not use hard water, as minerals can deposit on the surface of solar panels.
  6. Never step on a solar panel system because it can damage the panels and it can be dangerous to stay on the roof.

How can solar panels be properly cleaned?

The safest choice is to hire professionals to clean your solar panels. This is especially true for larger systems where efficiency losses can be significant.

If you do want to clean it yourself, it is important to do your research. The solar panel manufacturer usually provides specific cleaning advice that you should follow. You will need appropriate cleaning tools, such as those designed for solar panels.

It is important to use only clean, distilled water and always wear appropriate protective equipment, especially when on roofs. Cleaning should be done before dark or dawn to avoid heating up the solar panels.

Soak the solar panels in distilled water (do not use a pressure washer), then gently wipe with a special or soft sponge. Remove stubborn dirt with a sponge and a non-abrasive cleaner, then wash the panels again.
